As the world recovers from perhaps one of the greatest natural disasters in modern history, our prayers and hearts go out to the people of Haiti. The Lord is a God of pure love, and He takes no pleasure in the death of anyone. It is important to remember that God’s original plan was not death and destruction in this world. God created all things and declared them “good”, there was no death in the garden of Eden, leaves never wilted, lions and lambs frolicked together, and man was in blissful happiness. As sin entered the world so did its consequences. And now all mankind is facing the consequences of going against God’s will. Does the Bible give us any instruction for our time?

Jesus speaking of the last days told us…

“For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.”—-Matthew 24 : 7, 8

In the past hundred years we have witnessed two world wars, famines, plagues and now most recently major earthquakes. Just 6 years ago in 2004, there was the massive tsunami in Asia that struck my home country of Indonesia and killed over 200,000 people. As we enter the new year, yet another “biblical” earthquake hits this time Haiti, and has killed unnumbered thousands bringing devastation to those who have lost loved ones. But despite the prophetic disasters there is good news, Jesus told us

And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come. ~ Matthew 24:14

The good news of Jesus will go to the whole world, and what’s also exciting, God wants to use you as a humble worker. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. ~ Ephesians 2:10 God has work for you to do. To spread His gospel to the whole world. Heaven will be a wonderful place, free from the pain and disasters of this world. And God will wipe away ever tear from their eyes, there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away ~ Revelation 21:4. As God will remove death and pain from the world, why would anyone not want to look forward to the coming of Jesus!

But what can I do and how can I do it?

Jesus said…

Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.—-John 14 : 1-3

Jesus said don’t be afraid. Our home is not here in this world, but up in heaven where Jesus already went to prepare for us. Our life should reflect the character of Jesus Christ. This can be accomplished only by surrendering everything to God. Let’s examine ourselves and see where we spend the most of our time and our money. The salvation of our neighbors and friends will be in our hands if we don’t go out there and spread the word of God.

We need to prepare our self and others for the second coming of Jesus Christ while we still have the opportunity; after all tomorrow is not guaranteed for any of us. We can begin by spending more time in our devotion life and our prayer life. We need to feed our self first before we go out there and feed others the word of God.

Some practical examples of what we can do :

Read the Bible every morning before the busyness of our daily activities overtakes us and spend sometime on our knees praying to God.

We can purchase books such as “Steps to Christ” through and give them to our family, friends and neighbors.

Even as we go throughout our day we can carry tracts with us to share the good news with others. There are also those little booklets called “GLOW” that covers various needs of life. These are small books present powerful messages of God’s hope which are relevant to everyday people.

These little booklets can be dropped off at any public place or handed to someone on the bus or train. It comes in a small size, convenient for people to read. You can purchase them through or call them to find how you can get these little booklets. Let’s work together to spread the word of God, to prepare us and others for his second coming.
